The NYC Department of Transportation's annual Car-Free Earth Day will take place on Saturday, April 20th this year, and it's expected to be their largest-ever celebration of open streets in New York City.
This year, there are 53 open streets for Earth Day, up from 30 last year! These streets will remain car-free from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
MORE OPEN STREETS: Beyond the Earth Day event, see what streets are part of NYC's Open Streets program this year!
This year, Car-Free Earth Day will feature seven signature event locations, but there are also plenty of community produced locations, where you'll find performances, fitness trainings, giveaways, public art, and educational activities.
The best ways to keep it car-free every day here in NYC is by using mass transit, walking, or riding a bike.
So take the subway to a station near one of the below locations, and maybe enjoy the open road on a Citi Bike. This year, Lyft will offer unlimited 30-minute rides on a classic Citi Bike for 24 hours (use the code CARFREE24 in the Citi Bike app to get this deal).
The NYC DOT's Signature event locations are listed below; the additional 46 community-organized locations can be found at nyc.gov/carfreenyc. And other Earth Day events around the city include Earth Day on Governors Island, Broadway Celebrates Earth Day in Times Square, and Inwood Hill Park's 9th Annual Earth Day Festival.
