The MetroCard will soon be a thing of the past, with the MTA’s OMNY payment method replacing it as a faster and easier way to pay your transit fare. OMNY is already available on NYC Transit subways and buses, and it will roll out to the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North in the future.
If you haven’t used OMNY yet, here’s all you need to do.
Use your phone’s digital wallet, contactless debit/credit card, or an OMNY prepaid card.
Using your phone: Tap any phone or mobile device with a digital wallet. (If you set up your transit pay settings, you won’t even need to unlock your phone!)
Using your contactless debit/credit card: You can tap any card with the contactless symbol on it.
Using an OMNY prepaid card: Buy and load an OMNY card with value using cash or a debit/credit card at a participating store near you.
Just like MetroCard, OMNY provides you with free transfers between bus and subway, as well as other money-saving benefits, such as the weekly fare cap. Reduced-fare customers can also adopt OMNY — just click this link for more details. For more about how OMNY works, visit OMNY.info, and take a look at the below video:
