Bannerman Castle looks like a medieval ruin somewhere in Europe, but this castle belonged to Frank Bannerman, who purchased the Hudson River’s Pollepel Island in 1900 to store an inventory of surplus military equipment. A fire destroyed the buildings two years later, but their ruins remain offering rich history and panoramic views of the Hudson Valley.
Come aboard the Estuary Steward for a scenic cruise along the Hudson during which you will learn all about Bannerman Castle and its history. The 30-minute ride will take you from the ferry dock at Beacon station to Pollepel Island, where you’ll receive a guided tour of the island’s mysteries and mystique. (Please note: for safety reasons, entrance to the castle is prohibited.)
Tours depart from the dock, rain or shine, on Saturdays and Sundays at 11am, 12:30pm, 2pm and 3pm. There is a 72-step climb from the dock to the start of the tour and some rough terrain on the island, so wear comfortable shoes (there is a rest stop along the way). Strollers cannot be accommodated.
