Metro-North Railroad turned 40 this year, but its historical roots go back to the earliest days of New York’s transportation network. This history can be seen throughout its service area. Metro-North is the second-busiest commuter rail line in the United States after the Long Island Rail Road and as of early 2023 averaged 150,000 riders a day. It took extraordinary teamwork, grit, and determination to forge Metro-North from its many disparate parts and to successfully operate it over these past four decades.
Our newest exhibit, Metro-North at 40, explores the first 40 years of the Metro-North’s success. Here’s to the people who made it happen and to the next 40 years.
